Julia Cameron might call me a shadow artist.
Like a gallery owner who secretly wishes to be a painter, a movie critic who wanted to be a producer, or an editor at a publishing house who dreamed of being a novelist, I have always worked alongside technical talent. I worked with developers, programmers and engineers, admiring their skill but never developing a mastery of those skills myself.
I’ve found a way to help those technical geniuses in my own way, of course, as a content writer – and that’s nothing to shake a stick at. But I can’t help but watch visionary technology leaders in action and feel utter awe.
If you’re a technology fan like me, you’re going to love what I’ve got to share with you today.
I found 7 Ted Talks that will inspire you, intrigue you, and make you ponder the remarkable possibilities that technology is bringing into reality.
1. The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology – Pranav Mistry
What was so interesting to me about this talk was how Mistry walked us through not just the technology he’s been working to create, but his thought process. The way a tech expert’s brain works is almost as fascinating to me as the technology he or she creates.
2. 10 top time-saving tech tips – David Pogue
I’m a compulsive keyboard-shortcut user, so I did actually know many of the tips Pogue presented in this talk. But I’ll bet you’ll still learn a ton – and save a lot of time going forward – by watching this 5-min presentation.
3. This is what happens when you reply to spam email – James Veitch
I read about this “experiment” years ago, and found the Ted talk account to be just as hilarious. If you need a pick-me-up on a crummy day, spend 10 minutes watching this.
4. How I hacked online dating – Amy Webb
I’ve only been married for 9 years, but I can’t imagine dating in today’s digital age. My single friends regale me with stories of dating apps and cyber stalkers, and … well, wow. Just wow. So when I came across this Ted talk about using data to hack the crazy world of modern dating, I had to watch it. I wasn’t disappointed.
5. The new bionics that let us run, climb and dance – Hugh Herr
There’s so much happening in bionic technology today, it’s mindboggling. In the last two minutes of this talk, you’d better have a box of tissues at the ready.
6. The game that can give you 10 extra years of life – Jane McGonigal
When this game designer was bedridden and suicidal, she didn’t let her situation get the better of her. She created a game that could heal her – and anyone else who played it. This is a surprisingly moving talk.
7. A 12-year-old app developer – Thomas Suarez
Remember how I told you I admire the talents of technology experts? Well, this kid straight-up makes me jealous.
